UofG Sports Bursary Programme

A project by: UofG Sport

WE RAISED £12,100

from 16 donors

Helping incredible, talented student athletes pursue excellence in both academia and sport!

We are raising £12,000 this year to continue to support up to 45 athletes. We want to ensure that any student with the passion and determination to perform in sports on a national and international stage has the financial support to do so without their studies or student experience suffering.

Support like yours has helped us award financial assistance for 10 years. We are now able to support around 40 athletes a year and have directly benefited over 170 students since we began.

This funding will go towards maintaining the number and value of bursaries that we hand out to student athletes each year. This means that students can focus on their studies and make the most of the student experience while pursuing the sport they love. Every single penny you donate goes directly to athletes studying at the University of Glasgow.

Its hard to even think of the costs involved in competing a national and international level, whether its fees for equipment, competition fees, travel, coaching, training. Some athletes need to do warm-weather camps or altitude training in order to reach the level of their opponents. On top of that, these athletes are often studying medical, veterinary or engineering degrees and we need to be able to step in and offer support to ensure an athlete never feels they have to chose between their studies and sport.

Our athletes compete on the global stage; the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and European & World Championships. The costs of getting to and remaining at the required level are incredibly high. We never want an athlete to feel they can't compete or need to take on extra work which could impact an already demanding course load and training schedule.

Being part of these sporting events are a phenomenal opportunity for students, it’s a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to showcase their incredible talent. Many of our athletes couldn’t dream of these opportunities without support like yours.

Glasgow has become a great sporting city with world class facilities in athletics, cycling, swimming, netball and rugby and the University continues to rank in the top 100 Universities in the World.  Athletes want to study here but are often tempted to study where they can receive more financial support.  We want to match the financial support of Universities like Edinburgh, Stirling and Loughborough and we need your help!

Who HAVE we supported previously?

We’ve been helping students for over 10 years which means we’ve had some incredible names pass through our bursary programme. These athletes just demonstrate how important this funding is and what it can help achieve. Often these athletes are just starting their incredible sporting journey and its a crucial time in their training, we get such pride in being part of their journey and so can you.

One of the most successful athletes to come through the Sports Bursary Programme is Laura Muir; a graduated Veterinary Medicine student currently ranked World Number 1 in the 1500m. Laura is a well-known record-breaking British athlete. Some of her incredible achievements include taking part in the Olympics in Rio in 2016, winning gold in the European Indoor Championships in 2017 in both the 1500m and 3000m and completeing the double-double by winning the same events this year.  She has two World Indoor Championship medals from 2018 to her name and looks set to continue to dominate world athletics for some time to come.

Another phenomenal athlete who has recently come through the Sports Bursary Programme is Camilla Hattersley who graduates this summer with a MEng in Aeronautical Engineering.  During her time at University Camilla competed for Scotland at both the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as for TeamGB at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the 2016 European Championships and the World University Games in Teipei in 2017.

"I had so many great experiences whilst at University and am so grateful for the support I received from the Sports Bursary Programme. I was often training up to 30 hours a week on top of all my lectures and hand-ins.  The financial support helped me focus on swimming and uni and helped me go to training camps and competitions."

We are so proud to be supporting current student and incredible athlete Neah Evans, who won Silver and Bronze for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and a gold medal at the European Championships for Great Britain in the same year. Neah is currently in the Great Britain Performance Cycling Squad training towards the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year. Neah was an undergraduate Veterinary Medicine Student at the University of Glasgow and is now studying an MSc in Wildlife and Livestock Management.

"The Sports Bursary Programme support has been pivitol in funding my postgraduate studies.  This is allowing me to keep my veterinary skills and knowledge current whilst I am training full-time.  This will make such a difference to me when my sporting career finishes and I return to being a vet! I love being back at Glasgow after a break from studying!"

Along-side Neah in 2018/19 we supported an incredible group of athletes including 7 Senior Scottish Hockey Internationalists, Senior Scotland Women's Rugby athlete Louise McMillan and U-20s Men's stand-off Ross Thompson.  This group also includes Sirens and Scotland Netball athlete Ella Gibbons, former Team GB and Scottish Track Cycling Champion Jonny Mitchell and senior Scottish cricketer Mitchell Rao.  For a full list of 2018/19 supported athletes check out: UofG Athletes 2018/19

In fact, share it with everyone you know as we think it's a great idea, and the more people who know about it, the more likely we are to make this work out brilliantly.

Thank you for your support!
