UofG CHapel Choir
The University of Glasgow Chapel Choir aims to tour internationally every two years as well as undertaking regular trips within Scotland and mainland UK. Touring is important to our students as it gives them an opportunity to share their music-making internationally. Travelling as part of a choir is a unique and special experience. There's a shared aim in addition to exploring new places, and it's an unforgettable opportunity for all involved. It's a chance to engage with new audiences, including prospective students. The Chapel Choir are proud to represent the University globally in such a wonderful way, and international tours often reconnect our alumni and donor community with today's staff and students.
In July 2020 we are excited to build on the University of Glasgow's strong links with Ireland, by visiting Belfast and Dublin with the hope of also visiting Cork and Armagh, bringing the choral music of Scotland to a new audience. We are seeking funds in order to ensure that all our members are able to have this exciting experience and not miss out.
Who are WE?
The University of Glasgow Chapel Choir provides music for services and events in the chapel and elsewhere, as well as giving concerts and recitals throughout the academic year. There are thirty-two regular members (a mixture of volunteers, paid choral exhibitioners and professional lay clerks) plus around ten associate singers who join us for concerts and some other events. The choir is directed by Katy Lavinia Cooper (Director of Chapel Music) and accompanied by Kevin Bowyer (University Organist) and Tiffany Vong (Lanfine Organ Scholar).
Our long term goal is to support our student and alumni singers here at Glasgow by cultivating their performance abilities, helping to create a safe and creative community where our members can musically thrive.
We are proud to represent the University abroad and at home, reaching out to former and prospective students. Using music and our voices we can reach new audiences introducing them to new and old compositions and the traditions of Scottish choral music. Showcasing our Choir's amazing talent, offering all our members new touring and work experience.
We would love to tour Ireland as it has a strong choral tradition and beautiful performance spaces. Many of our students and staff are from Ireland and we would love to continue to build on the University of Glasgow's strong links with the country.
Where will the money go?
If we reach our target we will be able to send our 35 members to Ireland, ensuring that their travel is organised for the duration of the tour. The money we raise will mean that we can book our flights/ferry passage to Ireland and allow us to visit Belfast, Dublin and Armagh and Cork ensuring that we can represent the University across Ireland.
